Your Relationship With The Fretboard Is The #1 Factor In Determining What Your Guitar Journey Will Look Like
Dear Fellow Guitarist,
Are you tired of noodling every time you pick up the guitar?
Does it feel like you can’t develop your ideas when trying to be creative?
Do you find yourself writing the same riffs/improvising the same solos every time?
Is it hard to determine what you should be practicing? Or how to practice it?
Yea, I felt that way too for a long time…
In fact it wasn’t until 15+ years into my guitar journey, when I went to university to study it, that I started to be able to express myself freely on the instrument.
What was the turning point?
I finally knew my way around the guitar neck.
I finally had the “words” necessary to craft musical sentences and paragraphs, and articulate exactly what I wanted to say.
It is easily the most important breakthrough I ever made on the guitar.
Before that, I had played the guitar basically every day. I had developed sound technique, learned every rock and metal song under the sun, and was even playing with other musicians.
But I struggled to be creative. I had all the technique chops in the world, and nothing to do with them. I was stuck.
Stuck playing the same five or six minor pentatonic box licks.
Stuck stealing licks from my favorite songs without knowing the “why” behind them, or how to use them.
Stuck only feeling comfortable in familiar keys like Am, Dm, or Em, and only able to play in standard tuning.
I was able to identify not knowing the fretboard as a serious problem. It felt like I was leaving so much meat on the bone by not being able to use the whole neck. But my attempts to learn the fretboard on my own were all futile.
I watched countless YouTube videos on CAGED, tried memorizing all the note names, learned the intervallic system, and although some of it made sense on paper, I couldn't even begin to apply it.
After the last 7+ years of teaching, and hundreds of students later, I have realized that the place described above is an overwhelmingly common plateau that guitarists, especially rock and metal guitarists, have trouble escaping.
